Default possible transmission problems?

On my 99 F150 my gear shifter no longer goes on P. Its looks like every gear is down one. So R is park, N is reverse, D is neutral, 2 is supposely drive, and I guess 1 would be 2. I knew this was a problem but I didn't think it was a big one. A friend of mine drove it and said I was actually driving on 2 and not drive. He said there was not drive ! He asked 'didn't I feel the difference' I really didn't. Actually I just figured since I did have a park and a neutral, I just figured that d just moved to the next shift. And like I said I could not say I really felt a difference. My friend told me it could be something wrong with the transmission. Is this right? Has anyone had a problem like this?

Default

The shift indicator has slid on the steering column. If you know how to count you can feel the gears click
Pull it 1 click for reverse 2 clicks for neutral then should be able to just bump it down for OD.
