Since someone posted about how hard it is to get to the plug wires I wanted to post a story.
I had another Ford product ( I currently have an F150).
During what should have been a minor easy repair I could not reach it and after my hands were scraped and bleeding I called Ford and demanded to speak to someone who helped design the car engine and the way it was fit into the vehicle.
A guy answered the phone and asked how he could help me.
I told him about the problem and asked who the idiot was that designed that engine layout because I wanted to kill him.
The guy responded (no I not making this up) " That would be me" then he went on to apologize and say he and others were aware of their lack of concern for people who work on the cars and they would be designing easier access for repairs. From what I have seen with the new Fords he was telling me the truth.
The guy was so nice I had to tell him that I was not going to kill him after all.
He thanked me for that.
He really was a good guy, but he had never actually worked on car himself or asked a Ford mechanic for design help. Best of all he was not so arrogant that he did not admit he was causing people like me problems.
True story.

I would use genuine Ford plug wires and Ford plugs if I had that problem.
Sometimes aftermarket items are not really up to specs and don't mesh well with other things (like plugs and plug wires).
I had a VW that did the wire pop off thing and it was only cured when I went to the dealership and bought the plug wires and plugs.
I read so many posts about stripped plugs in the F150 that I went to Youtube and found a video of Ford engine running with a popped out plug.
Trust me, if your plug is stripping out you will know it for sure.
Besides, from what I can find the stripped plug thing is mainly an issue for Triton engines. Having owned and serviced many cars of all brands and types, I can tell you the main cause of plugs popping out is cross threading not design. Almost every model and brand of car I owned with Aluminum heads had the plug pop out issue. Some yahoo will put the plug in with a tool instead of hand threading it, force it in, and it is all over and it only takes once. What a stupid waste of a good engine head.

Default Miss fire too

Hi! Just bought a F150 1999, with a 4.6 motor. I had a problem with my prestone hose, it broke off and made quite a mess... since then I keep on having missfires... anyways, I read lots of post about missfires to find what was causing it, and I finally cleaned the sparks because it was full of prestone... it kinda helped but it started doing it again!!! I don't feel like changing the wires and the sparks, as many people did, and it doesn't seem to work... maybe there's still a little moisture there, I'll check it out again... Anyways, if you have an idea of what I could do or try to get it fixed... tell me!! Thanks

Pickuprules, you got all my respect!! You feel like killing when you got to work out there... If someone gets to change the wires and the sparks without a cut, I think I give him a medal!! Anyways that's cool that someone finally get to tell the guy that it was really badly designed...

Had the same problem with new set of Napa wires on my 98' f150 4.6. But we got to the bottom of the issue: The boots are long and the terminal was not seating on #3. This would run for a few miles, but then pop off. Of course, the spark would jump and fire the cylinder, but then would back off far enough to misfire after a few miles. The whole issue is solved in making sure the terminal clicks in place, which may take some wiggling and a lot of steady pressure to force it on. On my truck we replaced both the plug wire and spark plug.

Hope this helps someone

I'm a decent mechanic, so I'm not totally lame when it comes to maintaining this truck, but this one has me stumped.
I'm having the same problem with my 97. It seems to get worse below freezing temperatures (which in Texas this winter seems to be every other freaking day). a 15 mile drive home resulted in having to pull over 3-4 times to push the #7 plug wire back onto the plug. I just replaced the plugs and plug wires, and ever since then ive had this problem.
