pinion bearing how to ?
Got to do something about changing a bad pinion bearing on my 2001's 8.8 diff. Does anyone have a tutorial, how-to, pics? Anything would be helpful. Thanks.

Jack up rear axle, remove wheels and rotors. Remove housing cover, remove axle keepers, (inside carrier) slide axles out to clear carrier, mark carrier caps for location, remove caps and carrier assy, drop drive shaft, remove pinion nut and slide out pinion to the rear. Remove pinion seal for access to bearing cup and cone. Thats plan "A". Plan "B" is to have someone you trust do the job.

Must Have a Plan:
....gotta go with Bill's plan B, and make sure that "someone you trust" knows what he's doing and has the tools and instruments to do it right.
If you must do the work yourself, I'd suggest acquiring a complete used axle of known good condition to replace the existing axle. Axle shafts and brakes are easy to swap.

Folks are awfully squeamish about that diff. I know that preload is crucial here . I'm just looking for a good pictorial and how to. Someone here must have tackled it with success. I agree with getting someone who knows. My problem started because of an apprentice who changed a seal but messed up the preload. Should of done it myself.
