Default pause after shifting into reverse

my 2003 Supercrew with 254,500 miles kinda pauses after you shift it into reverse from drive then kinda jerks/clunks not hard but it's noticeable its a 4R70W with the 5.4 it just bugs me and it doesn't slip or anything in drive Also i don't know if it pauses because i wait until the Rpms drop to 650 after shifting into reverse before i let off the brakes.I have checked the U joints and they do not move. it also has a 3:73 open differential and it is a 4x4

Can you move your drive shaft while in park? The two things I'd be looking at is the gears in your rear end and the U-joints.

no I can't move it I pushed on the transfer case and it didn't move so idk if it's the trans mount or not.. I haven't owned up the rear end yet either

Replace your fluid, have the trans rebuilt, or drive it till it breaks. At 250k miles if it's the original trans it's lived a good life.

waiting for the filter and the 5 quart jug of motorcraft mercon v to arrive.. ( it's currently a tiny bit overfilled. ) then the rearend is going to get serviced. The clunk sounds like the rearend to me.

The clunk is from the vehicle not being completely stopped while changing gears mainly. The delay is cause by dirty fluid. Be fore warned that if you haven changed the fluid in over 100k miles the trans may begin to slip.

I stop completely before shifting gears and the fluid is bright red but we are going to change it anyway. We got it in 2013 with 243,633 miles on it so who knows what the PO did to it.. And our dad driving it probably didn't help ( doesn't stop before shifting into gear and doesn't f****** stop before putting his truck in park and threw ours into park while going almost 5 mph the last time he drove it )

Also sometimes it acts like it has TONS of power like squealing tires at less then 40% throttle from a stop ( turning slightly so that might be the differential and being unloaded ) and within 50 feet or so being at 40 MPH at 4,000 Rpms. and when its like that it doesn't make the slight clunk at all when i put it into reverse I think the transmission fluid is overfilled as well from the PO or the dealership that i got it from. i bought 8 quarts of Motorcraft Mercon V and a Motorcraft Filter and i plan dropping the pan this weekend. ( i doubt i'll need the full 8 so I'll use it in the power steering to change it again and in my cousin's explorer's steering )

If all you do is a pan drop you will only need 5 qts.
