p0401 egr insufficent flow

if that doesn't take your check engine light off.. then.. spray the egr lines with carb cleaner.. the two that go to the egr position sensor and the copper looking one that goes to the egr valve.. that way you can clean up all of the carbon deposited so that it flows better and more efficient..

No experience with this particular code, I'm stuck in the days of 2-digit codes read with a blinky light analyzer. :-)~ You might try a search engine like Google. I typed in 'p0401 egr' and this was the first link shown. Seems to have a fairly thorough 'how-to' troubleshooting guide.

1997 f150/4.6l - p0401 egr code
Ok lisen up shade-tree mechs. I did EVERYTHING short of changing out the O2 sensors and the CATS and the "Check Engine" light still popped on. Low and behold it was a vacuum leak. Check behind the battery (most common place) for a leak. Mine was where the three vacuum lines gang together. The black line had a pin hole. This cleared my P0401 EGR Deficiency Code and it also repaired my air conditioner. My A/C would blow on defrost when I accelerated. Now the air comes out the panel vents like it's suppose to when I accelerate. Keep in mind I blew the cash on a new DPFE, EGR, etc and didn't have to. The vacuum control for the EGR also is connected to the A/C vacuum line. I hope this helps and you guys have been wonderful. Thank you and Godspeed !

Lots of bad info in this old thread lol. User torkum nailed it tho. It's the most common (for the 4.6L's only). 2nd most common is the DPFE sensor itself.
