In the next few weeks I have to help my aunt move. I was planning on getting a 6'/12' uhaul trailer and helping her with that. And now I may have to rent a car hauler and tow a 1980's Chevy stepside pickup truck ( messed up carb). Would my truck be able to tow these trailers? I do not have a brake controller but I can order one. It's a 03 Screw 5.4 3:73 open Diff the hitch I have is rated at 6,000 pounds. I have new brakes also ( 1,200 miles on them maybe. ) and the fluids have been kept up and it is stock besides a K&N filter. I'm more worried about the car hauler trailer.

How far do you have to tow them? You may want a surge brake controller if you have to tow the car hauler for much more than a 40-50 miles or at high speeds. But if you have to move them 20 miles on backroads, it should be good. The truck should be able to handle it, I figure mine could probably do all that and I have the 4.6 and 3.55 rear end.

I think my aunt is going to push it ( with her car ) to her guy friends sisters house to get it fixed. My trucks hitch is rated at 5,000 so it is over weight. The receiver and ball are rated at 6,000 the hitch that is connected to the frame is rated at 5,000

then you can only tow up to 5k pounds. the chain is only as strong as its weakest link. and arent you under 18? uhaul may not rent to you

EDIT: just checked into it and 16 is the limit so you are good there. but that old chevy is like a tank. i think that truck itself is pushing 4500 lbs

Default Towing questions

You will be fine. I pulled a 6000 lb boat and trailer the other day with a normal hitch and it was fine

don't forget that your truck is configured differently and doesn't have all of the goodies / bells and whistles.
