Unhappy Oil Pressure bottoms out....HELP!!

1998 F-150 20k + miles...After driving for 10-15 min, the oil pressure will bottom out, truck will become sluggish, and a knocking sound will begin. After shutting off the engine and restarting, the gauge goes back to normal for another 10-15 miles, and the cycle repeats...HELP!! I've heard explanations from the sending unit to a bad pressure switch to gunked up filters...

I wouldnt bet on filters, they would act up all the time. The knocking sound makes it sound like you are actually losing oil pressure, not just an electrical gremlin. It sounds like a weak oil pump, only acting up when the oil is hot and becomes thin. It would be worthwile to put a mechanical oil gauge on it and see what is happening.

My Mustang used to bottom out on the gauge too, but it has a lumpy cam and the idle was bouncing all over the place...but, a high volume oil pump cured the problem. Of course these are two different beasts, but its definitely worth looking at the pump.

Possibly partially clogged oil pump pick up tube.
