Odometer/ trip meter trouble
Does anybody know what would cause the odometer to stop working. I want to know if there is a sensor I can check or would I need to replace the odometer at the dashboard? Oh, I have a 1997 Ford F150 4x4 OffRoad Package with about 176,000 miles. The odometer will work every now and again but mostly stopped working and is getting worse. The odometer and trip meter stop working at the same time. Thanks, JB

Either the fuse is coming loose, or you have a bad connection in the wiring, I think. Some of the other members have much more experience than I, and they will be able to offer other suggestions, if mine are not correct.

Does it stop recording the mileage? I have a 2000 F150 and a 99 Expedition and both of them have problems where the odometer will not display but continues to record the mileage. I've done some research on this and it seems to be a bad solder joint. Problem is replacing it requires replacing the entire instrument cluster (approx. $400) and tearing apart the whole dash.

Mine does not have a digital display, it has the old style counter wheels; would that still require anything electrical? Some of my older cars used to have a cable that went to a plastic gear into the transmission; I don't know if this one has this type; I could not find anything like that at the transmission.

Mine will be on for about 10 mins then shut off and comes back on randomly but i dont pay much attention to it. My buddies 99 mustang has the same type odom. and does the same thing but the 97 and up have diffrent odom. then the pre 97 has a more well i dont know how to expliain it but its diffrent.

Most likely something either in the tumblers or in what drives the tumblers in the odometer is broken. Most likely your only option is going to be to replace the gaugepack.
I know that on the trucks with the digital odometer that the problem with the display not working intermittently was a poor cold solder joint. To fix that all you need to do is remove the gauge pack and in the back where the wires for the odometer plug you will be able to see with a magnifying glass where the bad contacts are. You then get a soldering pencil and just zap the contact to give it a good connection.

my 2000 does the same thing - comes and goes but still records mileage. I have not found an easy solution for this YET. I'm not too worried because I have come acustom to seeing it pop on and off.
