Default odometer flickering

I have a 2001 Supercrew, and for the past two years or so, the odometer has been flickering. Sometimes this happens when I turn on/off the lights, other times just when I start up. Is there a connection somewhere to tighten, or is this just the nature of the beast?

Anyone else have this situation?

Thanks!

I have the same problem with my 99 4X4, it must be a loose connection because if I tap the panel in front of the OD, most of the time it will come back on.

Thanks, I'll try the tap technique. The dealer said it would be about $500 to replace, seemed kind of steep.

If memory serves me well I saw this in another thread in another forum. It was cold solder joints where the odoometer was soldered into the instrument cluster. Same symptoms and same temporary fix to stop it.

Its just a case of a poor cold solder joint which is causing the display to not get a good connection all of the time.
Having your dealer replace the gauge cluster isnt going to fix it, you need to take apart the dash and with a soldering pen clean up the connection.
Unless it really annoys you, I wouldnt bother with it. The odometer still counts the miles, it just doesnt display all the time.

Default Odometer flickering or blanking

My 1999 F150 odometer does the same thing, and I can sometimes restore the display by tapping the plastic cover above it. However the other day, I discovered that by lifting my foot above the parking brake pedal and pushing the wiring above there, the display returns nice and bright. Maybe in some cases the problem is not the usual suspect of a cold solder joint on a circuit board.
