No Revese or Overdrive
I lost reverse and overdrive last night when shifting into reverse and hearing/feeling a thump. 1st and 2nd work. In order to get into 3rd gear, I have to activate the overdrive off button on the shift. If I don't activate the overdrive off, the truck tries to shift from 2nd to 3rd(maybe overdrive) but loses drive.
There is enough fluid and it isn't burnt or discolored. A general search through google turned up that it might be the sunshell to sungear weld.
Does this sound like the problem? If so, what kind of $$ should I expect? If not, what else might the problem be?

Yup...looking at a transmission rebuild. Took it down today. The bel housing did let go. Lost reverse, 2nd, and 4th. Estimated to be about $2k repair. Nice...Merry Christmas.

Not sure what model it is. I'll look when I get it back and post it. There's 93k on it.
Other than coil packs popping like popcorn, and the 4wd engage solenoid failing on a logging road when hunting in ME, it's been quite reliable.
Never towed anything heavy...just a small pop up camper (2000lbs) and a 19ft carolina skiff.

where at in maine? im suprised, usually the logging roads are much smoother than the maine roads

Ha! Logging roads ARE much smoother.
I go up to Allagash, ME. Just outside Fort Kent. Need the 4wd to get up the smaller roads (skidder roads) off the logging roads in the International Paper owned land. Solenoid failed while going up steep muddy/icy ridge. Backing up was trip.
