Default Need advice on new Airbag assembly

I have an 03 fx4 Lariat, and my cruise control has been out and recently my horn only works when the key is switched off. I took it to my usual shop, and after a very long time trying to find the problem, they came to the conclusion that my airbag assembly had gone bad.

The kicker, a new one from ford cost about 800 big ones. They said they wouldnt legally be able to install a used one, which i could get for $50.

I'm stuck. Do i try to find a shop that would install a used one, or do i just bite the bullet and spend the $800?

I would get a second opinion. Or you could buy a used one and install yourself.

No doubt.

I have no idea what differs between your 03 and my 98 but I recently put cruise control into my truck. While putting it in I replaced what is called a "clock spring," because my airbag was out. I'm not even really sure what the clock spring does beyond interface the bag to the ignition. I guessing at this but I think it might also have something to do with the orientation of the bag while or when the steering wheel isn't straight up.

I can also tell you that the worst thing about replacing the spring on the 98 is the electrical plug is on the spring wires. Not the wires under the dash. The plugs are very small and they clip to the underside of the dash. Would have been much easier if the plugs and their fastening had been on the dash wires. Everything is facing away from you, under the dash and the spring loaded clip on the plug is on something a half inch long and smaller then a soda straw. Expect a lot of little cuts.

I would second the second opinion. Try a used one. 2 bolts and 1 connector.
