If you can, take some pics of the block valley (try to look down and behind the alternator). Also, outside of the heads matting surfaces. You may be able to get a good shot with the flash on.
A little carbon is normal, - as long as nothings wet. A good visual can help IF you know what to look for...otherwise, these are hints to engine condition without the ability to test.
Listen to it idle cold, - make sure the lash adjusters are quiet. That's a very good sign! These engines should not make internal noises. The most you should hear is the injectors clicking away...that's normal and perhaps induction noises when getting on the throttle.
Also, if noisy on the passenger side, check and double check the PCV valve. Allot of time people install bad OEM replacements that shouldn't be on the market. They're noisy and can mimic a rod knock or other internal noise. It's a false knock, so don't be fooled. If it has a Motorcraft valve, it should be quiet. If not....
