my check engine light just went off
i shopped around for mechanics to scan my engine for the code and they all charged really insane prices. i was able to get in contact with some mechanics on craigslist and they said they would do it for $30 and would even come to my place. should i trust them and is there a general scanner that works for all cars or is a specific scanner needed?

in california they dont check for free anymore. already went to two auto zones and to car quest and they said that there was a law passed saying that they cant do it for free.
and 98 triton, u sure the bulb blew out cuz when i turn on the truck all the lights turn on inside the speedometer, including the check engine light
