Default MPG 2003 F150 supercab XLT?

okay, changing this cuz i have people still kinda confused. the turck i wass looking at is gone. so right now, im just hunting the lots and sides of roads. i can only go $5500 for a truck with about 100k miles and any transmission.

The green 1998 we found the guy wont go any lower than 6500. So we're gonna let the truck sit in his lot for a week or so.

nowwww,

Yah we went back yesterday and the guy offered us 6300 being the final amount we play. so thats including taxes.

We're getting it checked out today and if its good, we're also buying it today!!! wooh!

donawho welcome to the site and looks like you have a great truck picked out. I could see why you are ranting about the truck. I have looked at the ad and everything seems to check out. Mileage is great and it is clean. I use to have an '00 with a 4.2L and got anywhere from 17-19mpg. I did notice that it has a tonneau cover and that will help with mileage as well. I wouldn't expect more that 18-19mpg out of the truck though. Remember it is still a truck and not a little 4 cylinder car. You are not going to drive by every gas station. If this is your first truck for the family, then you can always use the reasoning of having the truck for hauling. If you don't think you will use it, then let me be the first to tell you, you will and will love it. I hope you get the truck and welcome to the happy ford f150 family.

Thank you Iowa. Yeah I just couldnt believe it could ony get 16 mpg on the highway. Yeah I told them abut hauling stuff and my dad has been talkin about trips to home depot ever since. He's just hard to convince that it will be worth the gas money. Thanks again.

My '99 4.2 v6, 5 spd manual tranny, gets about 18 real world mpg...always has. Mostly highway driving. 42 miles to work every other day. I carpool with one other (he has an F350 diesel). BTW, it's been almost completely trouble free. One curious thing about it is it goes through spark plugs about every 15K miles. Don't know why. They look white & charred like it runs too lean. But they're cheap.

You will find it a bit underpowered if you tow a boat or heavy trailer, but it will get the job done.

donawho99, I have an 02 XLT 4.2 and absolutely love it. I logged all gas for the first 100K. 17.2MPG, that was 2/3 HGWY and city mix. I don't understand the real ess comment. Changed my plugs at the 100K. Am at 180K now and purrs like new. Had check eng lite two different times, with intel help, fixed both myself, DPFE sensor and the intake bolts and seals. Its not going to be a speed racer so don't even try, you'll damage the truck and your pride when a Honda Hybred cleans your clock. Keep it maintained and my money says you'll still have it after graduating College.

Bill is right on...

I had the Exact same truck in a 98 model and used to consistantly get 17mpg. Now I have an 03 FX4 with 4.6 5 speed and see 16-18 around town with 20-21 on the highway. Its not a racer, especially in the 4.2, but it had plenty of power to move. I pulled a 12 foot fully loaded uhaul many times with my 98 and never had any issues. Even spent a winter in Cincinnati and didnt find the 2 wheel drive that terrible.

I don't understand the plug situation either. But if I didn't change them, the motor would start to miss. The check engine light actually came on once. A mechanic friend of mine told me change the plugs first. After changing, light went out & she ran like a top. There's probably some ECM tuning I could have done to get the A/F mixture richer, but like I say, plugs were cheaper.

It has 78,553 miles on it. which is about 13,000 a year. My dad looked up the miles per gallon of the truck and it said 16mpg on the highway. is that correct? I really want this truck and I need help to back my theory up that it gets better mileage than that. I will mainly be driving it back and forth from school and just around on the weekends. Here's the autotrader link for the truck. I seriously need some help. thanks in advance!

That truck looks almost exactly like mine. I have the one-tone paint & seats are different, but that's the only difference.

You could get mine for half that price. But I have 182k mi on it. I replaced the rear ABS sensor to get the light out & I've ordered a replacement cruise control cable. Other than that, it's jam-up. No leaks, doesn't use a drop of oil, good clutch & tranny, new tires & battery. I'll have a sign on it in a couple of weeks.
