More Transmission Questions
2002 F-150 Super Crew 4X2 4 speed automatic w/overdrive. 74,000 miles. Called dealer and was told Ford does not recommend complete flush. All they do is drop the pan, replace filter and add about 4 quarts of transmission fluid. $185. Called a local independent repair shop and they offer a transmission service for $170 which includes a complete flush and refill of transmission and torque converter with synthetic fluid (about 16 quarts) but they do not drop the pan nor replace filter. Neither one of these is making sense to me so I am resorting to the professionals on this board. And Thanks In Advance for your help.

the ford dealer wants to drop the pan and replace the filter, replace the pan and top off the fluid level (4 quarts). Your transmission holds 14-16 quarts, the independent shop is wanting to hook a machine up to your truck that sucks out the old fluid while replacing it with new at the same time. They unhook the cooler lines and tap into those. This process does not involve them removing the pan, so the filter does not get replaced. The service you pick is up to you. If you do the filter change, you aren't getting THAT much new fluid, if you get the complete fluid change, you'll be stuck with a dirty filter, so either way it sucks, unless you can get them to change the filter afterwards and top it back off again. But its your call.

This job is very easy ....just can be messy.
I just dropped the pan, changed filter and even installed a drain plug in the pan for future ease. There was quite a bit of metal dust of the collecting magnet to clean up...not shavings, just normal dust.
Also popped out the rubber inspection plate fir the converter, used a LARGE screwdriver and rotated the flywheel until the bolt plug for the converter appeared. Remove the bolt and drain the converter.
Refill with fluids....remember to do this about two or three times as the converter refills.
I used synthetic...$$$
