Default Loose ring around transmission

Just got an 1997 F150 extended cab 2x4 with the 4.6.

There is a free hanging ring around the back end of the transmission. What is this and can I just cut it off?

It's not big enough to slip over the actual driveshaft. The balance weights get in the way.

Looks like a seal to me. It's obviously not doing anything, maybe some mechanic left it there when replacing a seal. But, wha' do I know?

Its the vibration dampener that is attach to the front drift shaft yoke. Helps eliminate some harmonics in the driveshaft.

So, if I remove it and don't replace it, something will likely fail soon due to the extra vibrations?

If you don't have vibrations now, then it isn't a problem to cut it off. Won't hurt a thing.

It's got 230,000 miles on it, so there are a few vibrations
I am going to cut it off today, I just wanted to show its location with the picture to help identify it.

I haven't even drove it at highway speeds yet, just been using it around town.
Thanks everyone.

High way speeds are where it will really show its head.
