So would I be better off getting a mechanical for the rear and ponying up for a selectable one up front?

A Trutrac would probably fulfill your needs too.

I'm going with a true trac in the front when I do my gears. Selectables are nice, but man at the expense. Detroit locker in the rear and I'm good to go.

Yes. Unless your running 500+HP and 40" or taller tires. Also depends on which rear end you have. Obviously the 34 spline 9.75 is stronger than the 31 spline 8.8. The front is the same on all our trucks, 8.8 28 spline open diff.

Front. Put a true locker in the rear. I'm guessing you have a 9.75 rear? either way you'll be fine! 8.8s Are quite strong and 9.75 is even stronger
