Lockers???
#11
best bet is an ARB rear air locker.... when turned off it acts as a limited slip open diff so in turns on dry pavement it allows for the inside wheel to turn at a different rate. ARB and detroit are the best in the business... arb is doing a deal where you buy one locker and get a free air compressor... the air compressors are really small and will be most likely mounted inside the engine bay. the arb is 850 and will probably run you 300-450 to get installed. what kind of wheeling do you do? if its just a quick mud run with buddies every now and then or hunting when your off road there is no need for a locker... it would be better to invest in some good tires if thats the case. jmo

haha same here man im jus tryin to make it through college.
what i would do is just get a posi track for the rear end and a ****** strap. since your probably gonna be doin mild trail ridin with buddies ,which is exactly how i made it through high school lol, your never gonna be more than 30 feet from someone else who is perfectly capable of jerkin you out. or if your the kind of person whose too proud to get pulled out you could invest in a mid-sized winch and a ****** block. there worth there weight in gold.
but to clear up the open diff/posi track/locker delimma.
an open diff comes on it stock )unless its a rubicon or something awesome like that) and it sends all the power to the tire with less traction. why? i dont know but its gotten me stucker than chit more than once
a posi track sends power to the tire with more traction. which is wayyyyy better than open diff, but its not 4wd yet.
a locker comes either air (most expensive and most reliable), manual (usually a cable to the cab. or electric with a switch) and auto locker, which locks in when you hit a certian slip percentage.
theres also a permenant locker called a spool, which locks both wheels together until you get it removed. i wouldnt recommend getting one of these unless you plan on staying on dirt forever or not turning at all. a cheap,, redneck way of doing this is welding the rear axle shafts together it does the same thing, you just cant take it out.
hope this helps

How are your welding skills? Get you a different stock axle for $100 to play with so you dont mess up yours...
My next build I'll be welding the spiders, Free locker haha
all in all you'll have a locker for $100 haha

haha thats funny old skls callin me redneck haha. but anyways you dont weld the shafts together
This is a center chunk form a 5ton I'll be doing it to my 2.5tons, but you can kinda get the idea
Oh and just for the record I'm in college too! Built my junk when I was 18 and decided to build a S/C harley when I turned 19
It all can be done on a budget, just learn how to do it yourself

Aww man I was just kidding I know I'm a redneck, no doubt... Other wise I wouldn't of screwed up a perfectly good truck with 24"s of lift. My calculations weren't accurate on the MPG 12 to 4 wasn't exspected. haha
Your other info though was pretty much dead on, you know what your talking about!

Ha I wish it wasn't mine... I wouldn't be dropping 7G's To make a mud truck streetable, and trailer it to every ride I go on.
Oh and to the OP the only thing thats bad about the front being locked is it takes a football field to turn around. haha Honestly I didn't start turning soon enough around sonic and ran into the bushes and almost hit there dumpster, had to back up to make the turn.
Found it easier from then on to go through the dounut shop parking lot and hop the curb to pull straight into a stall and back straight back out hoping the curb. Too bad it felt like a speed bump
