Default limp mode/ wont shift

1997 f150, 4x4. 4.6 with auto tranny. If you floor it from a dead stop it will run threw first up to 30 or so mph and rev up to 3-3500 rpm but wont shift and kinda sputters/backfires i guess you call it. Will shift as soon as you let off the gas. Will also do this on the highway if your trying to pass will just rev up a little and not pick uo any speed. The trans is not slipping its just like its almost in a limp mode. My last 4.6 f150 ran amazing this ones driving me nuts. Iv put plugs, wires and a fuel filter on it. Someine said cats might be plugged? Any ideas?

Do you race, why do you need to drive it this way ? It's a 20 year old truck, probably not going to be perfect. Does it shift normally when driven normally/civilized ?

no racing but ever tried to pass someone with a truck that dont go anywhere when you need it, or wont hardly run 80 down the interstate? Or pulling a boat up a hill going to the lake....it kinda sucks i know its not a race car but still nice to beable to pass someone....truck litterally struggles to do 80mph.

Personally, if I had this problem, I'd have the codes read on the transmission. There will be at least one set, due to over-rev of the shift point basically, and maybe one for the overdrive solenoids. Sounds a bit like a solenoid pack (assuming you have the 4R70), and there are several writeups on here about that problem.

White....can you pop up here and give your opinion? I know can you chime in with a probable cause.
