Default 02 F150 gas mileage.

I have a 02 F150 2wd Crew cab with the 4.6L. I have recently started a new job about 17 miles one way to work. I have only been getting 11 mpg. I drive for 10 miles on the interstate at 70 to 75 mph with cruise on and 7 miles on 2 lane at 65 mph with cruise. Truck has 131000 miles on it. New catalatyc converters. I have plans to have the tranny flushed, plugs, wires, fuel filter, injector flush and pcv valve replaced. Question I have is should this increase the mpg or is the 4.6L a gas hog? Or is there something else I may be missing. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks.

That's a bit on the lower side for a 2wd truck, especially if your doing a decent amount of highway driving IMO. Winter gas is not helping you either. It could also be the gas your using.

I would think you may see a 1-3 MPG improvement max with the fixes. Never hurts to change the plugs and do a fuel filter. your truck will still be a gas hog

if you are doing the math based on fill up or the gauge, you might actually be off a mile ir two per gallon over the whole tank. mine is getting about 12mpg with a LOT of city driving (i live in south philly) but its been in the 20s. coming from a vw jetta it was a bit if a shock, but its twice the engine. Most of my trips are 15 miles or so and a lot if them in traffic. highway mpg are longer trips than you or I are taking with relatively stable rpms. but dont fret, our super duty trucks at work barely get 9 mpg highway.

On my last tank I got about 12.8 MPG I don't expect much more out of a screw 4wd I'm actually quite happy with that haha

Sounds a bit low to me. Do the maintenance you listed if it doesn't help your mileage its not a waste of money. In the summer if I try I can avg 19-20mpg(us) on a full tank (98 4.2v6 4x2). Maybe slow down on the highway see if that helps, also make sure your OD isn't switched off.

I agree with above that this is a little low. I get around 15 mpg in my 98 4x4 with the same engine. The items you plan should help and it will certainly be good maintenance for your truck and make it run better. Also, if your engine is running cool, it will not get the fuel economy as designed. It could be your thermostat is stuck open or a previous owner put a low temp thermostat in it. You didn't say where you are from but it could also just be the cold weather driving that most of the country is currently experiencing. When the engine is cold, the on board computer (PCM) tells the engine to use more fuel and thus; lower fuel economy.
