Default knocking in oil pan and metal shavings on dipstick 2000 f150

my son has a 2000 f150 xlt 4x4, when he came home from school today it was making a terrible noise, I think I narrowed it down to the oil pan area, it sounds like there is something jumping/banging around in there, plus I checked the oil and there were very small but noticable metal shavings when I wiped off the dipstick. The oil was low, what could be in there? what should I be looking for when I drop the pan?

Hey there. If you have narrowed it down to the oil pan then the chances are that a bearing has gone out on either the rods or the crank. Is it runnning any rougher like the idle or while driving? could of busted a rod??? Its hard to determine without taking oil pan off. look for bigger pieces of metal or part of the bearings.

it seems to idle fine, I have not driven it, it only makes the noise in gear, when in park the noise goes away.

Can't explain the metal shavings at this time, what interests me is the no noise in Park. Remove the little round plug on the bell housing see if nuts are tight on torque converter and if possible see if flex plate is cracked.

Another member had similiar issue, will look for it and get back to you, hers ended up being a trans problem. But again, why the metal shavings on the dipstick?

Ok that brings up another point I should bring up-
the starter has been hanging up, could this be related? It sounds like it's in the oil pan but perhaps not. The trans was rebuilt about 4 months ago

As you know the starter or the starter drive engages the ring gear which is part of the flexplate (flywheel). There could be a connection between the two. Is the tranny still under some type of warranty? Won't hurt to get there opinion.

Well I'm not sure about the warranty because I bought the truck then found the recipt in the glove for the rebuild, I will just have to crawl under neath it and do an inspection. If need be I will call transmission repair place and get the info from them
