Default 5.4 auto trans service question

Im looking to change my trans filter today. the manual says the trans takes somthing like 15 qts of fluid. but now reading posts everyone is talking about draining the Torque converter. easy enough i can do that but one question. after draining the TC and installing the plug. Do i need to personally fill the TC or just reinstall everything, and fill the trans and the fluid will automatically fill the TC?

Yes, fill the trans to the full mark, start engine and leave in park, add fluid as necessary to refill to full mark. Place in drive and then back to reverse and recheck level again in neutral or park before driving.

Make sure and clean the tranny pan out really good before you reinstall everything. The new filter will probably come with a new gasket, however the factory gasket is better to reuse on our trucks. Clean the magnet off in the pan as well...the typical small shavings you see are perfectly normal. Mine had needle bearing and metal shards...not normal

Just manually spin the engine until your plug is pointing down on the torque converter. Tie everything back together, and do exactly as Bill said, placing it in drive and reverse. When all is said and done, you should be at just a pinch over 14 quarts of fluid.

Probably time to do your transfer case fluid too...wouldn't hurt while you're down there! Its just two quarts of Mercon. Its tricky to fill, would be best with a syringe (thats what I used) that you get at the parts store.

Good luck!

Have the ignition off, put a socket on the balancer nut and turn with a breaker bar. Or buy a remote starter and go from there, a very handy tool for the box, can be pricy if buying a good one. Have had mine for 30 years.

Haha, Bill is on top of his game today! Beat me to it! Just like he said, a socket and breaker bar will do the trick. I've never personally used the remote starter, good old hand tools did the trick for me on my fluid change.
