Default Interchanable Instrument Cluster

I have a few questions about the instrument cluster in my 1997 ford f150.

It displays KPH, and the "mileage" is in kilometers, i was wondering if I grabed another cluster from the salvage yard that displayed MPH, would the wiring harness plug right in? and if so would it still record the "mileage" as Kilometers? and lastly since i like to keep things as simple as possible, do i have to take it to a dealer to set the mileage up to keep it accurate?

Most dealers will not touch the mileage. I would recomend attempting to find one as close to your mileage (converted) as possible. If you can find one that is within 1000 miles or so, I personally would not worry about it. If you can not, the dealer can install a sticker that states what the mileage of the truck and odometer were at the time of replacement.

As for interchangability, I believe that the cluster will swap out just fine. As for reading the accurate speed and distance traveled, I think your ECM is a metric spec unit. I could be wrong but the newer trucks are not as easy as the cable driven ones of old. I could not hurt though to pick up a cluster and try it. Worst case is that you need a few more parts but you will need a cluster anyway so see what happens.

I believe that with the 97-98 clusters the changes are in the cluster. The PCM receives the signals from the instrument cluster for engine controls.

Thank you for the replies, I'll grab one from the salvage yard and try it out!
