Intake Manifold Leaking Coolant/Water Help
1997 F-150 4.2L 5-Speed truck. Great site btw.... I've poked around a little on here, but the work computers won't let me see this forum. It gets blocked.
Last week my truck threw a P0174 code. Truck running fine. I was loosing water, but nothing obvious. I cleaned the MAF sensor, changed the oil, replaced fuel filter, cleared code. Light returned. 3 days later the truck just died while sitting at a red light. It restarted about 30 min later. The truck was shaking like crazy when idling and got worse when revved up. Trailored it home. Pulled dipstick and it's full of water/mayonnaise. Dropped off at a shop to diagnose and when I picked it up, lots of white smoke was coming out of the tailpipes. Never before now.
Today, the lower intake was pulled and an obvious tear in the gasket was visible beside one of the valves. Now, my questions are:
Question #1 - Should I put some transmission fluid in the oil and run it for a few minutes then change the oil and filter? Or just change the oil 3-4 times to clean it out?
Question #2 - Any idea what the difference is with the 2 different intake gasket kits from Ford? 1 states for models before 7/1997 and the other states 8/1997 - 1/1998. My motor is a rebuilt motor that was installed around 2004-2005. Only got around 20,000 miles or so. May buy both kits then take back the one I don't use.

That's pretty bad. I'd start by taking the wet/dry vac to it

If you do buy both gasket sets, be warned that many parts stores will not take back a gasket set that has been opened. When I bought a set in a box, I asked the counter guy if I could open it up to look at them and he never said anything about their policy. Ended up not using that set and found out about the policy when I took it back. He glued the end of the box back together and I got my money, but he didn't have to do it.

Wow, chev2, sorry to see ye engine like that. I don't know wha' to tell ye. But I'd probably be looking at another truck, unless the body, etc. is in excellent shape, then maybe a new motor.

Got her fixed yesterday. Purring like a kitten. That junk was everywhere. The oil drained for 5 hours. It was thick. Filled up a 5 gallon bucket.
All those who are talking trash about the 4.2 here on this post, didn't contribute NOTHING to my post. Thanks to those who actually did contribute. Guess it was a sign that my job blocks this site. Not gonna waste my time here anymore. Couple of WORTHLESS parasites on here.
