Once you take it out, it's completely self explanatory if you have even a little mechanical skills. A few star screws and gentle prying.

Is your Odo display lit up and displaying any numbers? I ask because it could be two different issues.

If the display is lit up and you can cycle through Trip & Odo then I'd venture a guess that the problem lies somewhere before the cluster.

Are you sure you don't have a short in your VSS connector or wire?

Does your ABS work or have an ABS light on?

My odometer does allow me to cycle and is lit.

I am able to get the correct speed via diag. scanner with no gps capability. So id I have a short it is between the cluster and the port.

My abs functions correctly and I have no light, except at startup as it should be.

Just wanted to update that my truck is back to normal now that we had it towed to the nearest dealership which is Dick Edwards in Manhattan. The charge to reprogram the keys, cluster, etc was 65.oo.
(the cluster was 60.00 at Hess and Sons in J.C.)
and the tow was 60.00.
( My husband installed the instrument cluster at home.
The dealership quote for that labor was 90.00. )
so altogether the repair was around 185.00
The total cost was much less than getting a reconditioned cluster put in from the same dealership. i think over 400.00. I have a lot of respect for this company's repair shop (Dick Edwards) because I asked them to also check the transmission and they said there was nothing wrong at all. I thought that if there was a chance to rip off a girl that would have been it. Anyway, Thank you for the excellent advice you all gave. It is invaluable.
The only downside is that now my truck appears to have 199,000 miles on it instead of 77, 500. I could get that reprogrammed but i don't think I will ever sell my baby, so I can live with it.

Good deal. Glad you got it done fairly cheap. Should be a great truck to have for a long time.

I would have it set to the real mileage in case your truck is ever wrecked,77k means more cash than 200k

This is a valid statement that is very true. You'll get a lot more money for it from your insurance if it was totaled and read the correct milage being that it's less than what it currently reads. If it were me I'd have the correct milage programmed to the cluster

And if you want to keep the truck a 200k truck is totaled before a 70k truck is.

Thank you for that information about the mileage and the possibility of a wreck and totaling. We will take care of the mileage programming. We didn't think of that!
