Default '02 5.4 engine rattle

I've got an '02 screw with a 5.4 2V. Just bought the truck a few months ago and it has had this rattle since I bought it.

The rattle is worst when its cold and gets better as it warms up. Listened in with a stethoscope & it sounds mostly to be coming from the bank 1 valve cover/cylinder head/front cover. I know i have read up about timing chain tensioners and such, and i plan on putting new chains, guides, tensioners, etc. Just wondering if this is definitly my problem & if anyone has had follower or lifter problems with a 5.4 2V? or what else to look for as I take on this project.

Any input is appreciated!!

don't know exactly what you mean by rattle, but if its similar to a ticking sound then that is normal with the 5.4 triton

Well it's a ticking/rattle I'd say. I've listened to a couple other 5.4's, and they don't make the same noise. It's more prominent on the right side too. I would just inspect but I'd rather be replacing something while I've got it torn apart.

Other than the noise the truck runs great

not too sure then. i've just heard that the 5.4's tick because of the cam phasers if i remember correctly. mine does it sometimes, and other times its not so noticeable. but its worst when its cold out.

A tick From a 5.4 is normal...as long as it goes away as the rpms get higher.

I know they sound kinda ticky, but I'm positive this isn't a normal one. It does go away once the rpms are up. Mostly it's the loudest when it's cold. And faintly heard at hot idle
