Default idle air control valve return spring

I have a 2000 f150 lariat that has had idling issues. Mostly on warm up but lately at stop lights before she reaches operating temp she'll start bucking and snorting.
Sooo...
I just got through replacing the idle air control valve (motorcraft)
However, I noticed the new one I bought has no return spring on the shaft. The old one does.
When you peer through the hole where the spring is supposed to be, you see a fitting at the base that looks somewhat like a raised "X" with a hole in the center that the shaft passes through.
After replacing this and other items the idle is even worse and you can hear a very soft, quick sound like someone spraying a can of paint in a rythmic cycle.
So do ALL Idle Air Control Valves have a return spring?
The one I removed looks brand new and the inside looks barely used.
Any help would be appreciated
PS: the part came in the correct box. with no part number affixed to it.

I replaced my last summer and it worked excellent. Considerable diff. Never noticed any spring though
