I don't think the low oil light even comes on unless you're more than a quart down, so no worries.

I don't know if I did any damage or not I haven't had and problems but I ran it on two quarts I think, I noticed it was ticking so I stopped in a gas station and checked the stick and it was dry so I went inside and got two quarts and that didn't even touch the stick so I bought two more, put them in and it was good. What I was rely mad about was that the oil cost like $5 per quart.

The filter on my 97 goes on horizontal on the factory remote mount.
I pre-fill and I don't have any problem with the oil leaking out when I screw the filter on.

I fill it up, and wait a bit, then top it again, and give it a bit of time to absorb.
The Motorcraft filter has the anti drain back feature that holds oil in the filter.
I know I'm probably not filling the filter completely, but at the very least I'm preoiling the filter media and holding at least a little oil in the filter.

My oil pressure comes right up when I crank it over.

Mine is a 4.6, and calls for 6 quarts. I'd say thats probably what your 5.4 calls for too.

Everything is seeming just fine on the truck, so I'm certain I caught it fast enough. Just strange, never had a filter fail on me!
