Default K&N Air Filters on 97 F150 4.6L

Hello everyone, I am new to this site and I am sure this topic may have been discussed before. But if you can bear with me, I would appreciate your experience. I have a 97 F150 4.6L 4x4 w/auto trans. In an economy where every dollar counts, I am looking to gain a little performance and fuel economy. What has been your experience with K&N Air filters in these two areas?
Thank You in advance.

Do the Gotts mod (1st link). Then read about oiled filters (post #7 in the 2nd link) and either stick with the stock filter or get a dry high flow filter. This may or may not help with gas mileage, mileage depends on other maintenance and driving habits more than any mod can do.

Thanks Guys, from what I read here, I would never re-coop my investment. So if I just keep a clean filter in it, sounds like my best bet.
I have had many friends that claim the K&N filters add power, GPM, etc.
But have always been skeptical as they etend to have the best of everything, if you know what I mean.

I just did a GOTTS and a k&N and the mileage increase is phenominal. I went from 15-16 hwy to 19hwy. i noticed a good pwoer increase in the low to mid range as well. As long as you clean your MAF Sensor at every 10k you will be fine, long term effects are jsut that.....extremely long term and are minimal. read the links that otto posted.
