My 98 4x4 with the 4.6 has 117,000 and going strong! I need a 3rd door though, the prior owner claims it fell off a lift and crinkled the door.

Yea they do suck considering that I have 240,000 miles on a 4.9L and the only thing that went was the water pump, and I have a friend with the same engine that has 476,000 miles on it and still runs good. But yea they do suck.

1997 4.6 with 169,000. Replaced gas tank, upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends, rear u-joint, driver wheel bearing, and alternator. Has knock coming from #8 cylinder(back driver if im mistaken). All this since 140,000 miles, now rear main seal leaks. Its had a rough life, both on the road, and used as farm truck. Hoping to make it last another year and hit 200K, then moving up to 7.3 powerstroke hopefully after college gets done.

I think he's referring to the 4.2L and not the 4.9L. The 4.9L is an awesome engine, ford should never have switced to a V6.
I've had 2 4.9L trucks that were stone reliable, and that engine has plenty of torque.
