How long is this truck going to last?
Got a 2001 5.4 ext. cab short bed fully loaded with 276,000 miles on the original motor and trans. How long do these trucks go? (new coil packs (of course) and normal stuff)
On a side note my work has a 1997 4.6 auto with 374,526 that is still the original motor and 1 rebuilt trans. These trucks pull trailers all over the mnts. of Utah and it seems they just keep going.
So the question will the 5.4 last as long as the 4.6?

With proper maintenance all of the newer modular engines will go a long way. I don't see why the 5.4 couldn't run just as long as the 4.6. The one thing that would concern me is the transmission. If it hasn't been taken care of and if it's been hammered on..........that's a lot of miles to have on a transmission. Honestly, if I were to buy a truck with that many miles I would be doing some work to it. These are all possible concerns or things that might need to be replaced.
Basic tune up (plugs, coil packs, etc...)
Wheel bearings
Front CV shafts
Ball Joints
Pitman Arm
Idler Arm
Swingarm Bushings
U-Joints
Tranny Flush (with filter)
Coolant Flush
I would also recommend switching over to full synthetic fluids in your engine, transmission, transfer case, & both diffs (don't forget the friction modifier if it's limited slip). Your brand of choosing is completely up to you, but I personally use Amsoil. They make a fluid for everything. Read around on here and you'll hear about the more common problems people have so you know what to look for.

i disagree with jensen about runnin synthetic, it wont help your engine at all except for oil change lengths, and, if you dont have any leaks now, you might start finding small leaks appear due to the uniformity of the synthetic molecules, if synthetic hasnt been normal in it, its a lil too late now ha, my advice would be change it over to a high mileage conventional oil and change it every 3000 like normal, synthetic will help in the diffs and transfer case but thats pert near it, no offense jensen
