Default How hard to replace ball joints?

Well I have a bad ball joint for a fact. Squeaks like something terrible. On a scale from
1 to 10 how hard would it be to replace them in a home garage. And if u guys know a estimate on how much a mechanic would charge. Thanks

I replaced both upper and lower ball joints on mine this summer. I was quoted $800 and $850 from 2 different shops. I did it myself for...around half that

And its not hard to do as long as you can work common tools. You have to rent a press for it from any normal auto parts place. Usually around $100 to rent, and you get your money back when you return it. I bout Moog ball joints i believe. It wasn't the base model the store offered, but about middle of the road. All with grease nipples to re-fill

Wow. I was figuring around the $500 mark. That sucks. Did you get an alignment afterwards?

I had lower ball joints replaced and it cost around $450. There are videos online showing the procedure on Ford trucks and SUVs. Also check A1 auto website for parts and instructions. The lower ball joints can be purchased for around $65. The upper joints are more expensive. You may have to rent or borrow tools.

Ya its not too bad as long as you have the right tools. I did mine in about an hour and took it in for an alignment afterwards and everything was still within range

Do a youtube search. Lowers are fairly easy and uppers are not bad either. More than likely just need to do only the lowers. Dont need an allignment to lowers only.

Just did my lowers last week, bought new ones for I think $38 each? Something cheap like that. But it took me about 6 hours to do it considering I was learning on the way. I broke my drivers side break line by accident so watch out for that. It wasn't too hard of a job though. Really just figuring out what to do was harder than actually doing it.

Thanks for the info guys. Gonna get a quote from my mechanic. If it's any where near $800 then I'm definitely gonna tackle this my self.
