Default 4x4 problem

I have. 97 5,4 wen i engage 4x4 with the lever i feel the shift locking in. The "stick" that goes from the transfer case to the diferential turns and the axels also turn but i got no power to the wheels... I have tajeb the wheels off and there is no lock on the hubs. Can someone tell me where to look? Thanks

Do you have the vacuum operated hubs? I know my 2002 acted the same way but I had the electronic switch on the dash. Turns out the vacuum line to the solenoid came off and was not locking the hubs.

Yeah, just check the condition of the vacuum lines from the solenoid to the hubs. Mine was hanging off. LOL.
