Default 97 F150 5.4L - running rough, flashing service engine light

Hello all. First time post on the forum. I having an issue with my F1 50. Just bought a 2003 with the 5.4 L engine. 177,000 miles.

started driving home and it was fine. After about an hour I started getting a rough engine. Kinda almost seemed like it was sputtering. The service engine soon light was periodically flashing, then would turn off and go away. The light would come and go periodically, always flashing whenever it came on. This only happens when I got up to 65+ miles per hour, or when trying to accelerate heavily.

right before the issue started I hooked up and started hauling a very small enclosed cargo trailer. It weighs maybe 1400 pounds.

can someone please help me out with what this problem might be? Very frustrating because the on the test drive it was fine and the first hour on the highway it was fine also. I've been told it's most likely a misfire? But I want to get the forms opinion please help me!!!

Sorry correction this is a 2003 F1 50 with a 5.4 L Triton. Not a 97

Ok, a flashing service engine soon light indicates a mis fire which can be caused by:
1. bad plug
2. blown plug
3. bad coil
4. something else

The first thing to do is pop the hood and see if you have any blown plugs.
1-4 are passenger side and 5-8 are driver's side.

The second thing to do is run to autozone/oreilly's and get your codes read and see if they tell you which plug is mis-firing.

Once you know which one is mis firing you can then take the coil pack off and move it to a different spot. See if the mis fire follows it. If so then you know it's a bad coil pack and you need to buy a new one. If not look closer at that plug.

If you can't tell what plug is firing you'll need to invest in something like a wireless scanner and something like torque pro or forscan and log your drives. If you log you can tell which plug is firing and when.

Did you buy this from a dealer or an individual?

It flashes when misfire is bad enough to damage catalytic converter. You dont want to drive it that way
