Won't shift out of park
Having a problem when I turn the truck on, step on the brake, and try to put it into gear, the lever won't move, as if im not stepping on the brake. Eventually after messing with it for a while I can get it to shift into gear. Anyone had this issue and have any idea what it might be?

My truck had an issue where it wouldn't go into park or reverse without excessive messing around. I took it to my fathers shop and he told me there is a bolt somewhere behind the dash that just needed adjusting. No idea if this would fix your issue, but it may be something to look into. Sorry I don't have more detailed information. Just giving you a little bit of insight it guess.

My 97 4.6L did that. It turned out there is a plug under the dash on the steering shaft I belive that cracked . A shop replaced the plug that was like a sta-kon wire terminal. When you press on the brake it operates a relay that lets you pull the transmission out of park. You should here it activate when you step on the brake pedal, if you don't here anything my guess is that's where your problem is. Please post your findings when you get here fixed. Your foot probably hit the terminal and broke it or knocked it off.

Check your brake lights. If they are not working you may have a bad fuse or brake switch. You can also press and release brake pedal and listen for the actuator in the column.

There is a switch on your brake pedal that will need to be replaced. Look under the dash at the brake pedal area--Its on a bracket and actuated by the pedal arm. Short term solution is to start with the selector in neutral.

Sometimes I grab for the shifter too quickly and this will happen in my F150 and my Ram 3500. A friend told me to make sure I hit the brake first, as grabbing them at the same time doesn't work. I thought that sounded stupid, but since I started paying attention it cured my issue. At first I was insulted that I was doing it wrong, but it was good advice. I make it a point to press the brake before reaching for the shifter. Never happened again.

turn the key on acc then shift to neutral and start it. then shift to drive. that will get rid of the switch to see if thats what it is.. my 98 did that thats why i got it soo cheap. it was just a blown fuse

My '97 F-150 has the same issue. Broken wire on that switch that is mounted on the brake pedal. Have to turn the key one notch and then shift into neutral to start it, and the cruise control won't turn off when I tap the brake. Pretty dangerous! I fixed it once with an agonizing hour under the dash with a soldering iron. Now it has broken again. I want to buy a new connector but can't find one. I guess I'll cut the wires so I can take it shopping with me. I'd rather not go tracing the connection back through the wiring harness.
