Hi,

I have a 2001 Ford F150 SuperCrew V8. The last couple of days my heater will cold and and the guage will start to overheat. It doesn't happen all the time but is hit and miss. Generally if I turn the heat off the guage goes back and blow hot air. Sometimes I can smell coolant when I get out of the truck and have seen splaters around the resevoir.

Any ideas? I am hoping it isnt a head gasket.

First thing is to figure out where the coolant is coming from. Check you oil and make sure it isnt milky, the same with the coolant. Run the engine with the cap off, if coolant constantly flow or bubbles out of the cap you have a head gasket problem.

White smoke coming out the exhaust also indicates blown head gasket.

Thanks for the responses.....so far I checked the oil and coolant niether was milky and there is no white smoke comming out of the tailpipe. I have been tied up and have not been able to take it to the garage.

is it possible your coolant is poor and freezing up..??

Just had to replace the headgasket on my truck and it was having the same problem as yours. But it had no coolant mixing with the oil anywhere. It was throwing misfire codes tho which I was told was from the head gasket. Hopefully your luck is better than mine....been working on the damn thing for about a week now and am $800 into it just to change the head gasket.

Thanks...I had the thermostat changed and flushed the coolant and same thing happened.....It blows hot, then goes go cold for about 10 minutes then the guage goes very high then falls back and blows hot again....very strange, but I am out of ideas.
