Default Anyone made a homemade intake?

I have the stock air filter setup with the exception of the GOTTS mod and a K&N filter but I really would like to expose the filter as a cold air intake just for added looks under the hood.

I get the feeling that I can't change it to look like a cold air intake without buying a new one of those expensive filters that fit in the cold air intake setup by K&N. If I'm right has anyone made a homemade exposed intake in any way using the stock filter design?

If all you want is a CAI, go to the parts store and get a spectre cold air intake. There only like 180 compared to 300(k&n) and you can get a blue filter to match.

I know a guy at the local o'rielys with an 04 new body with a 3" body lift that made his own out of PVC pipe painted it black and slapped on a cone shaped air filter, says it works fine.

Check out f150.net they have a how-to where you cut up the air box to look like a cai. I thought about doing it a long time ago

Maybe I'll just cut a large square window in the filter case and keep it shielded with a clear plastic of some sort. That way I can expose the air filter and see how dirty it is like the newer vacuums but keep it pulling air under the fender.

what kind of clear plastic could I use that could be bent and mounted in the air filter case?

i would suggest just replacing the filter and the plastic plumbing. to keep it as cheap as possible. you could cut into the stock air box to expose the filter. i would not do it but to each his own.

i would rather protect my motor than gain 1hp with a open air intake. just my opnion. whats more important all the hp that the truck makes now or add few hp and make it weaker or more suscepible to damage. youll have to figure that out on your own. some people its worth the noise and extra power some its not.

if you make a intake that is just as protected as oem and flows better thats the best imo.
