anyone have any experience with Granatelli coils
thinking about getting 8 of these and E3 plugs
the coils are supposed to be 42k volts and from what ive read the ford coils are 25k volts

Here's my experience and hopefully it will save you the trouble.

Just spent last 2 days installing and then troubleshooting...

Helped my father put on a set of the Granatelli COPS (purchased from Troyer) on an 08 Ford F150 Supercharged Foose.

First off... the are incredibly fragile. When trying to adjust the coil to plug length in the boot, the clips become loose. Also, Granatelli recommends gapping the plugs ~.006 greater than normal. So we did that too with the set of Brisk plugs that we installed about 2 wks ago.

Idled great... but once engine got up to temp and you put your foot in it once to try them out... hesitation... loss of power... rough idle. That was day 1.

Spent the next day pulling COPS and plugs. Thought maybe the gap was too large so we set it back to the original .032 to .034. Also noticed that the wiring connector on the COPS were cracking from the strain of the wiring harness. Yes... all that strain of 2 whole wires. Becoming even less impressed. So, repaired/reinforced the Granatelli COPS with epoxy to fix those that cracked and hopefully prevent the others from cracking.

Tried again... Idled great... then repeat of Day 1.

Thought maybe the ECM needed to be reset due to the High-Output COPS. Disconnected the negative side of the battery and let sit for about 5mins. Reconnected and now there's no... and I mean NO throttle. Idles great but no throttle actuation. Placed code reader on ODBII and reads throttle actuator stuck. I think the ECM has shut down the engine so that the throttle can not actually be used due to some other problem.

So... put the OEM COPS back on... reset ECM again and now the problem remains. No throttle response/actuation.

Was considering putting a set on my 08 F150 FX2 Sport but quickly withdrawing from that consideration. We're still not sure what the problem is... tried all connections, fuses, resets, etc... and still nothing. Dealer is sending flatbed out on Monday to pick the truck up. It's still under warranty but don't know if that means no charge. I'm sure the service department will come up with some reason to provide an invoice.

So... in short... our experience has been less than successful. Also, the orientation/location of the wiring connector to the COPS mount on the valve cover is different. OEM connector is opposed 180 degrees to the valve cover mount. Granatelli's is only offset about 100 to 120 degrees which causes interference on about 6 of the 8 locations due to wiring harnesses, retaining clips, casting(s), etc...

My recommendation is to stay away. Perhaps someone else has a better experience with the Granatelli's that they would like to share. I'd actually welcome the opportunity to hear about a good experience with these as compared to ours.

thank u very much for this. the only question that i would have is would it diffferent on the 2v 5.4 that i have opposed to the new motor in that truck. i know the coil do have different part number and are different. im wondering if higher power coils with even make much more power? was also thinking about doing e3 plugs.As long as the oem coils are in ur truck the dealer will probably cover everything under warrenty, but then again i worked for a ford dealer and warrenty claims SUCKED

I just got the granatelli mpg coil on plugs for my 2001 4.6 f150. They have up to 35,000 volts I think. It also has 0 Ohm resistance, no RFI / EMI interference thanks to patented protector ring and solid stainless connector cable with stainless snap lock spark plug connectors High temperature silicone boots, 8MM jacket with fiberglass-reinforced braid resists temperatures up to 500 degrees. I am using Bosch single platinum plugs. I will let yall know how they work. I hope I don't have to re gap my plugs.

I installed the new coils today and so far so good. I felt the difference instantly. It runs smoother and has a good low end torque all the way threw 5k. I will see if I get better gas mileage and to see the longevity of these coils. I have 225,000 miles right now. I will repost in 25,000 miles if everything goes well.

So what's the verdict now? I'm having many stuttering issues so I'm thinking about replacing the coils.

I installed Accel super coils on my 98 5.4 Expedition. I noticed a definite increase in low end power. I put over 10,000 miles on the truck before I sold it and never had any problems. Have you looked into the Accels?

I have 2003 5.4 motor and I have accel super coils on and E-3 plugs and they r great

My truck hated the e-3's I beleive they are what killed the piston in the #4 cylinder

I had to replace 2 coil packs so far. One of the coils itself failed then the wire that hooks from coil to plug melted. They don't use the spring like OEM or the accels. I am going to try the accels and if they fail, I will try the msd coil on plugs. Stay away from the mpg granatelli green ignition coils. I know granatelli makes several different coils but I am going with good reputation and trying accel.
