going from 4.6 to 5.4 supercharged, thoughts?
So i may have my hands on a wrecked lightning, regardless im going to buy the thing if i get a chance and part it out but i have been thinking of upgrading from the 4.6 thats in my 01 supercrew now to a 5.4l. ive read the swap notes on the other forum from 4.6 to 5.4 n/a so it doesnt seem too big of a deal. would it make that big of a difference to drop this lightning engine in and roll with it? from the n/a 5.4 only makes 100 more hp and lb/ft of torque. this im sure would probably put the trans at or over its limits but i could swap the 4r100 if necessary. has anyone have any advice, i know there was a guy on here or the other forum who just got the supercharger and threw it on his king ranch and seemed like it was fine.

You have to get more than the motor. I don't know all the details off hand, but I know you need to change up the fuel system and a list of other things. charliedyal jferg92 can give you more info.

It's the easiest and cheapest route. You can most likley find a speed shop local to tune your factory original PCM, - dial it in/tune for lightning engine. Or, you can send it out.
Simple swap.

Yea, I wouldn't go thru the 4R100 hassle when you don't really need to. UNLESS, your truck is a 2wd and/or you had one to begin with. I doubt it. You'll see why researching that subject. All I did is cut to the chase for yuh.
So yea, -Go for it man!

I dont see a stock 4R70 living very long behind a L setup Especially with a 4.6 converter ratio on the converter. The torque multipler in the converter is vastly different between a 5.4 and a 4.6. I have a 4.6 ratio in my E4OD as thats what I spec'd for it when the trans was built. IIRC the 4.6 multiplied ratio is 2.2 in the 4r70 where as the 5.4 is a 1.81. That practically 40% more torque instantly going thru the clutches and drum.

thanks for the replies guys, i was planning on using the 5.4 torque converter, the 4r100 as a last resort, i did read the extensive write up on swapping it in, i wouldnt have a problem doing but dont want to go that route quite yet. i dont drive crazy haha, well not now anyways. Just looking for a bit more power on tap. Was also planning on having another trans built to handle the power as you had suggested. i was trying to find the one gentleman who had a king ranch, he swapped over just the supercharger and ran it against some subaru sti and sounded like he didnt run into too many issues.

It will move but would grenade the 4R70 very quickly.. Hell I'm not even a built 4R70 would handle a L setup with a 4.6 converter. I mean your talking about 900-1000 ft/lbs of torque hitting the drum. I would keep the 4R70 and have a spare on tap that is built to handle the extra power and pickup a looser converter for a 5.4/4R70 combonation. That way the trans would live and still be able to boogie.
