Default Front driveshaft compatibility?

Hey everybody, I snapped my front driveshaft Saturday, and I'm planning on going to a junkyard to get another one. I've got a '02 F-150 4.6 with the 4R70W and the manual transfer case.

My question is, what other driveshafts will fit? I'd assume that it has to be the same motor with the auto tranny, but can I use the driveshaft from an auto transfer case? Also, how about expeditions? My local pull-it-yourself yard isn't very big, so my choices will be limited.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Well i have heard that the auto and manual tcase are different in the way they mount to the trans but not sure if that really has much difference on the shaft, take your old one and measure it length width at different point and go find one the same shouldnt be that hard.

I'd measure it, but the old driveshaft opened up like a tin can when it broke, so I can't just put the pieces together and measure it. Will measuring from the mounting surface on the transfer case to the mounting surface on the axle work for length? Same idea right?

Here is a list of parts for the front driveshaft for an 01. This is high as my program goes. This is for a automatic. Go to one of the Ford websites, and check different year models, to see what is interchangable.

1 4782 Front flange
2 4635 Universal joint kit
3 — Bearing (part of 4635)
4 — Seal (part of 4635)
5 — Snap ring (part of 4635)
6 — Spider (part of 4635)
7 — Splined stud shaft
8 4421 Rubber boot
9 4866 Rear flange
10 4841 Driveshaft slip yoke
11 — Boot groove (part of 4841)
12 4K227 Large clamp
13 4K227 Small clamp
14 4K227 Driveshaft
15 — Front yoke (part of 4602)

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I found a nice driveshaft from a truck with the 4.6L and auto tranny on Ebay, but it has the auto transfer-case. I'd ask the guy to measure it and then I'd compare that measurement to the mounting surfaces on my truck, but to tell you the truth I don't really trust just anybodies measurement.

So, does anybody have any advice on whether or not this will fit? I don't want to buy it and have it not fit, its from a private seller, so I can't just return it.

In my opinion it may fit but have it mesured. the centerline of your shaft is usually the flat surface where the u-bolt enters the yoke.by putting a ruler across the yoke you mesure center to center. the seller on ebay should mesure center of joint cup to centre. The slip yoke may throw the mesurement a little off.
