I have $92 total in my system. You just have to be patient and look for the deals. Once you get the head, the rest is real cheap and simple. There is currently on eBay, one of these Escape radios for bid, and is currently $39 with 2 days to go. They are not very popular with the Escape crowd, but the F150 guys are starting to pick them up and install them. Cheaper than a Garman, or Tom Tom, and without a lot of trouble.
sorry I was reading the link where he laid $164 for the unit

Yea, I don't know much about it, I have all that touch screen stuff in my DD. It is cool. The OP is referring to navigation, -bulit in I take it. That's the trick right ? - vrs running a separate after market navigation system ? Perhaps linking up with Sirus, iduno?

Forgive, I haven messed around with this stuff yet lol.

EDIT: But I plan on doing something like this with the factory look if it's possible in the future. I haven't begun putting the interior back together yet, - that's 2nd to last.
YES. Built in Navigation. Something that wasn't available and then adding it. It makes the truck much more enjoyable, with all the new roads and stuff we have. I've lived here all my life, and still don't know where all the roads and stuff are. They are continually building new housing yearly and adding many new names which are hard to find without some kind of assistance. Now I don't have to use my cell phone to navigate, which is much more dangerous than using dash assistance.

I also added factory navigation system for my 07 Mustang, and made steering wheel controls functional, by using a 2013 Boss 302 steering wheel. The car was never made that way nor did it come with navigation in my model. All in all, a great add on to that car.

As you can tell, I like playing with what isn't there, then adding it on and and making it work. lol

Cheapest one on eBay currently is this one. Two others that were cheaper sold already.

I drive a 14 MKS. Got a good deal on it with all my aarp discounts. Man a set up like that would be neat to have out in the woods with the 98. As long as I get a signal, it would work right. Perhaps the have enough satellites up there now.

So as far you know, there really isn't a better way ? Like say, -if you had a 500 dollar budget or so.

MKS, nice. Beautiful and great driving car. I looked at a beige one that was for sale, and just loved the car, but not the color. I settled on a 2013 Taurus SEL.

Hell, if we get a signal here in Alaska, Michigan should have them everywhere. lol. I'm sure that you would use it offroading, and I probably wouldn't though. I've read some of your posts. lol. It was just a simple mod, I'd been planning for a couple years, and I finally found the radio and went for it. If you do go with this, I hope you enjoy it.

Geeze how many years have you been reading my posts lol. I think you PM'ed on another site , maybe 6 or 8 months back. Unless I know 2 people in Alaska lol.

Was that you shoveling snow of a roof in a T-shirt on television? Just curious.

The cars nice, temporary, just a lease. Most likley try a Ford diesel next. The 98 is going to need jump logs. It's quicker than moving them out of the way. Tried that with the tractor, damn near flipped the thing.

Anyway, it would be cool to chart where I'm going via sat.

It wasn't me shoveling snow. We only had one/two small snow dumps this year. Our total snow drop is less than 1/4 of our normal totals. We have NO snow on the ground now, dog races cancelled, IronDog has no snow, Iditarod is being moved, all because of no snow. It's been in the 40's the past week and even raining. We've had a poor snow year, and the snowmobiler's are all up in arms. The dealers are not selling anything, as you have to go over 100 miles to find snow this year. Our snow went South for the winter. We sent it to you guys.

The Escape requires 8 on the speakers (bottom) and 7 on the top. I had a hell of a time finding a 7 & 8 plug connectors. I found 8 and 8 all over, so I ordered one to try. The speaker one was easy, but the upper (7 wire), required me cutting one terminal off. It was fairly easy task. I then hooked those to the connector for the 98 late model, and hooked it up. You only use 4 wires on the top. They are 1,2,3 and 4. .
Do you have a link to the metra connectors?

Here is the metra link. It takes one of each number. 71-1777 and 70-1771 should be correct for your year, but double check the Metra catalog.

You will need this antenna or similar also. That is all the wiring. The rest is you adding the two Metra connectors together, and putting in the head. It is a very simple procedure. You make the harness, unplug your radio, add the made up harness, plug into radio, add the navigation antenna, and you have basically done the whole install. I'll try and get some pictures up this weekend. It says it's not working but just click on the picture and it will take you there. Glitch somewhere.
