That makes me wonder if the sensor went from simply not working to shorting out.

It looks like it's got brake fluid or some other fluid in the sensor when we unplugged.

Love this thread. Thank you! It gives me hope that I can follow suit with my early 97.

As far as the CC issue, it's my understanding that it's the leaking brake fluid that causes fires. I had mine repaired not long ago (couple of years ago) at the local stealership.

Also wondering... are you keeping a running $$ tally on this build? Just curious.

Correct. There is a constant hot wire to the switch, and fluid would get in the plug. Odd enough, it would only happen with the truck off.

Not really, I know I got the donor truck for $1000 which that came some left over from selling my Dakota and the other half was selling a carport. Sold the donor truck for $300. Seats were $100. Carpet I had a $250 gift card so I got it for $65. Stereo was $200, New hoses/belt,coolant etc was $250, Bedliner was $50, Windshield was $150, Fender and bumper was $120, Cluster was $70. I'd have to sit down and add it all up but I know I'm under $3k, probably closer to $2k.
