Default A F250 axle on F150?

I picked up one of those fancy chrom rear diff covers when i went to go put it on i noticed it was way too small.... when to check the tags but they were gone, then my brother said it looked like the same size as his 250 and he got his old cover and it was the same... did lariats come with a larger axle or is that most likely aftermarket? its a 1997 f150 larait ext cab4x4

Not necessarily. The F150's come with 8.8" rear diffs, which are also found on Mustangs, 9.75" which is an option, and the 10.25" rear diff. which is also used on the F250's.

For what it's worth, my 02 Lariat has the 9.75" rear axle, AND the 9.75 and 10.25 look very similar, the 8.8 looks completely different.
