Default Explorer alternator in F150?

Does anyone know if an alternator that came out of an explorer with the 4.0 liter will fit on a 2002 f150 with a 4.2 liter?

Yes it will fit, but it MIGHT be clocked a little different for the voltage regulator, etc. I believe the year range is 95-01 Explorers and Rangers only. I think Ford changed it in 2002.

No, they are not interchangable. Different part numbers and the look like they mount different.

edit: well when you change the year, then it should work depending on which 4.0 (OHV or SOHC). I initially compared '02 with '02 and they are different, but if you look at a '99 v6 OHV Exploder it is the same part number (the SOCH is not the same).

Yeah, the OHV and SOHC are the same with the exception of the clocking of the regulator, post, etc. I am pretty sure I've made them work (interchange) before on the Ranger, but I am not too familiar with the 4.2 bracketry. I actually have a fairly new OHV alternator I can take a photo of if needed - but it will be after I get home from work.

If you go out to Fordparts.com and enter your VIN number you can look up the alternator part number for your truck (or any other part number for that matter). If it matches the part number for the Explorer, you're good to go.
