Default Transmission swaps

I have a 97' Ford F-150 Lariat 4.6 engine, 2 WD, and automatic transmission. The transmission is shot and I have an opportunity to purchase a transmission that is said to be interchangeable. It is or was the transmission in a Mercury Grand Marquis, 2000 model with a 4.6 engine. Any advice would be welcomed and appreciated. Thank you

Not interchangeable as it sits. 97 valve body's are different than 98+.

I appreciate the feedback. Could you be more specific, please?

97's are softwire... also have a completely different pinout. 98 went to a ribbon style.

You could use one from a 96 or 97 Mustang, Thunderbird, Cougar, Lincoln... Not a 2000 though. On 10th gen trucks, 97 was the only year you'll see that version though.

If you wanted to, you could use a 97 valve body - or even try to repin it. I've never done it, I just have this documentation saved.
