One thing that I don't think was mentioned is the dreaded exhaust manifold leak. That could be your guy right there. As far as the coolant smell, I'd start by looking at the condition of the radiator and hoses. Mine was stinking a bit, new rad/ hoses cleared that up.
Timing set was a fun... had some trouble with the fan removing it from the water pump (at first i didn't realize it was threaded on) and getting the old water pump out of the cavity was a bit of a feat. Overall not bad probably just time comsuming and making sure that the timing doesn't move while you remove the chains.
The last adjusters were easier than i though only had 2.5hrs in them.

Did you just pull them straight out with needle nose pliers after popping the rockers out?

Another thing, you "primed" the adjusters correct?

You can pop them out in 5 min easy

Didn't realize you had the prime them....
And the the adjusters came right out just used my fingers.

Hold them in oil and work the actuator until the bubbles stop to get the air out. That way they aren't run dry until oil gets to them. Similar to packing a bearing
