Engine Knock / Ticking
#11
I usually pull the trans with the motor. I find it easier to put back in and get lined up if you have the the trans and engine mated already. Plus it will be way easier to unbolt the transmission and bolt it to the new motor with it out of the vehicle.

I heard / read from other posts that this could be a timing chain tick from it streched and slapping off the guides. If that is the case does anyone think something like that happens immediatley? I.E. i never heard it before and it started just the one morning?

May sound dumb but how do you know the sound isn't coming from the rocker arms? Seems like a lot of trouble to replace 16 lash adjusters and a full timing set which those from Ford would probably be at least $800.

One thing that I don't think was mentioned is the dreaded exhaust manifold leak. That could be your guy right there. As far as the coolant smell, I'd start by looking at the condition of the radiator and hoses. Mine was stinking a bit, new rad/ hoses cleared that up.
