Found solution to all who have had this problem
After many monthes of dealin with an anoying mother F***in ticking noise comming from the drivers side back of my truck i finnallly found the problem. the connection where the EGR tube goes into the manifold was leaking. the nut had rusted badly and leaked. it wasnt noticeable but i put my hand close to it and felt hot air. Bingo. picked up an EGR tube today and am getting a fitting tommarow. hardest part is going to be getting that fitting out. been soaking it all day in pb blaster. will try tommaow to get it out! hope this helps anybody with the same problem.

The first time I changed mine (rusted through), the fittings came loose off of the EGR housing and manifold fine after a week long soak in PB. but the tube twisted off with the fitting. I couldn't say what wrench size it was, I made one out of an old wrench, cut and welded the jaw bigger and put a bend in the handle. It wasn't that hard to reach and throw a new one on, and its pretty cheap. I'm pretty sure a leaking EGR tube causes some drive-ability issues, I noticed horrible mileage and the noise was maddening.
