Default Cleaning up FX4 wheels

I'm trying to cleanup the wheels this weekend. Bought some black magic from autozone, that crap didn't even make a dent! After three applications and a scotch brite pad, the inside of the wheels are still brown with brake dust. I bit the bullet and bought Iron-X

It's supposed to work wonders on wheels, haven't tried it yet though. I'll update and let you all know. My question though is, the clear is peeling off the wheels. I was thinking of hitting them with aircraft stripper after the Iron X. Do I need to worry about the rubber on the valve stem or tires being eaten away by the stripper? And, should I or shouldn't I clear the wheels afterwards? I know a few of you have stripped, sanded and painted your wheels. Just wondering on your experiences after having cleared, or not.

Thanks

I want to know how they turn out. I have my stock FX4 wheels (not on the truck) and the clear is peeling also. Keep us posted. Good luck.

I just did a set of the KR wheels. I used stripper and pull all the old clear coat off, and it turned the wheels bright aluminum. Once I put the clear back on, back to original looking. I had no problem with the stripper and the valve stems. Hope that helps you out.

I'm wondering if anybody has removed the clear and not re-cleared. Will it be enough to just keep them polished? I understand that it will involve extra maintenance, but I'd rather that than a finish that'll just end up flaking off in a year or yellowing.

I've refinished these wheels. I used aircraft stripper to remove the clear, painted the whole rim, and sanded the faces of the spokes from 150>220>320>500>steel wool> buffing compound> Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish.

Jbrew kept going and got to about the 2000 grit level with his for a mirror shine.

I noticed that the fronts get a little dirty from the road and brake dust but I keep them clean with the mothers aluminum polish when I do my once a month systems check.

They are from the 2003 Heritage trim f150.

Looks great guys, the cleaner should be here tuesday. I'm going to take it one wheel at a time; clean, strip, sand down through 2000, polish. I'll post pics after I get the first one done.

Ok. First wheel done! Only took about 11 hours! I opted to sand by hand, instead of using a power sander. I was worried I would take too much material off and create valleys in

the wheel. I stripped the clear off, used steel wool on the inserts and wet sanded 220, 400, 600, 1500 on the face. Followed up with Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish with the drill attachment. Only three more to go!
