Default check engine light

ok heres the problem. my check engine light came on the other day so i plugged the code reader in and the code reader sayes it can not connect to the system. tried 3 different code readers keep getting the same thing . as far as i can tell i dont have any blown fuses but i might be missing one. also i have 2 power ports. one says power port the other says cigarette plug the cigarette plug one does NOT work. does anyone have any insight for me. I really do not want to take it to a dealer they like money way too much. by the way its a 2001 Scab with 5.4 auto tranny and 4x4. thanks in advance
